JOB DESCRIPTION: CARPENTER
STATUS: Full Time – Hourly
POSITION: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Foreman and Supervisor
ROLE: Non-Supervisory

Summary/Objectives

A Carpenter works closely with the Superintendent and Foreman to perform carpentry tasks related to the construction of foundations, footings, slab on grade, cast in place walls, tilt wall construction using different materials including wood and steel. The construction laborer performs tasks involving physical labor at construction projects. The position may operate a variety of hand and power tools, clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, and remove waste materials. The position may assist other craft workers and use different types of working materials including wood and steel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position lifts heavy objects, walks, and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue; and effectively jumps, sprints or throws objects. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multilimbed coordination. The position requires the ability quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform standard to moderately complex carpentry tasks necessary to construct, erect, install concrete formwork, rebar and tilt accessories as well as rub and patch and minor concrete repair.
  2. Must be able to use appropriate hand and power tools and materials required for completion of a job such as a tape measure, hammer, saw, drill, level, chalk box, razor knife, nail puller, nail gun and square or other tools as necessary.
  3. Ability to use a builder’s level and perform basic layout is a plus.

COMPETENCIES

Experience with concrete work including foundations, footings, cast in place walls, slab work, site concrete pavement and tilt up construction.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 40 hours per week. This position frequently requires long hours and weekend work.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
